I graduated MB ChB from the University of Otago in 1977. I worked as a House Surgeon in Timaru for two years where I did a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (not very relevant now). I then did a year Anatomy demonstrating at the University of Otago.
I trained in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in Dunedin and Christchurch prior to coming to Palmerston North at the end of 1984. I have been an ENT Specialist at Palmerston North Hospital since 1985. I also started working privately in about 1986 and set up Totara House Clinic in 1991.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and belong to the NZ Society of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery. I have a corresponding membership with the American Academy of Surgeons.
I consider myself a general Otolaryngologist and do all the common ENT procedures like tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, insertion of ventilation tubes, septoplasty, septorhinoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery and myringoplasty. I have an interest in otology and a special interest in osteoradionecrosis of the ear. I also have an interest in salivary gland diseases and the surgery thereof, including parotidectomy. I am involved in running the Voice Clinic at the Palmerston North Hospital. Other areas dealt with include snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, the management and surgery of neck masses, surgery for prominent ears, and dizziness.
